Freakin' Express-News

Well folks, it looks like after agreeing on a choice for mayor, the Express-News and I won't be seeing eye-to-eye on any other race. The Express-News has endorsed Ron Segovia in District 4, Ray Lopez in District 6, and Noel Suniga in District 7. Me, I've endorsed Roland Gutierrez in District 4, Larry Romo in District 6, and Elena Guajardo in District 7.

As I said with the Hardberger endorsement, the boldest statements at the Express-News aren't usually made when their Editorial Board endorses candidates. Sometimes that's a good thing, most of the time it's a bad thing.

To give you an idea of what we're dealing with, check out their endorsement of Bush:

"Although President Bush appears unable to define or admit his mistakes of the past four years, he surely has made them.

They include misjudgements on Iraq- both in the reasons for going to war and in assessing the invasion's aftermath- and his inattention to budgetary matters that have led to massive deficits.

...

A second Bush administration would be more aggressive in seeking to engage terrorists abroad as a strategy to protect this nation. While the doctrine of pre-emption warrants further debate, Kerry has not demonstrated a clear or different vision.

We hope the president, in a second administration, will move to re-establish relations with long-time allies who differed with the United States on Iraq.

On the domestic front, we urge the administration to move to the center, seeking, as Bush did in Texas, to find bipartisan agreement on divisive issues. With the campaign past, the way should be cleared for that approach."

As Homer Simpson would say, "D'oh!!!"

Who knows, maybe we'll agree, on the District 8 and 10 endorsements.
